The World Wide Web contains a vast supply of resources to assist in family history research. Following are some of the on line resources that I have discovered in the process of tracing my family history, plus some others as well. No guarantees are given as to the quality of the pages referred to, or even whether the page is still there. This page will be updated occasionally, so come back often.

Australian Resources National Archives of Australia FREE SEARCHES Contains an extensive collection of documents from Australia's history. Copies of documents available for a fee. Armed Services Personnel Records can be searched here.

NSW Births Deaths and MarriagesFREE SEARCHES Provides on line historical indexes including place of registration for: Births in NSW (1788 to 1905), Deaths in NSW (1788 to 1945), Marriages in (1788 to 1945). Copies of certificates can be ordered (Cost about $22.50)
NSW State Records. FREE SEARCHES Provides a wide selection of historical material, much of which is indexed. Perhaps most interesting is the Assisted Immigrants index, which provides information on the vast number of immigrants to Australia between 1839 and 1896, when the Commonwealth took over responsibility for immigration. Note that not all immigrants are listed, only those who were assisted to migrate by various schemes promoted by governments.

Internet History Resources MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED ($$) Provides you with images of historical documents which contain information which can help you trace people who lived and worked in New South Wales during the period 1850 - 1920.
Victoria  Victorian Births Deaths and Marriages CHARGE FOR SEARCH This transaction allows you to search indexes of Births, Deaths and Marriages for Victoria, Australia, from 1836 to 1985 (Deaths), 1924 (Births) and 1939 (Marriages). You can also look up family groups for couples who married or began having children in Victoria up to 1860.
Public Record Office (PRO) of Victoria
FREE SEARCHES provides public access to the historical records of Victoria. The only searchable databases at the moment is the Unassisted Immigrants Index and the Assisted British Immigrants 1839-1871
Tasmania State Library of Tasmania NO ONLINE SEARCHES Provides a list of available resources within Tasmania and other States. Few are searchable online, however the following are available:

Newspaper Indexes for Family History Researchers from the Hunter River Gazette, Macleay Chronicle, Maitland Mercury, Manning River Times, Parramatta Chronicle, Windsor & Richmond Gazette, Wingham Chronicle, published by Rod and Wendy Gow 
First Families 2001 pilot program funded by the State Library of Victoria, was designed to draw together stories of Australian families to celebrate the Centenary of Federation in 2001. It is a 'read only' searchable database.

Lincolnshire County Council Archives Information of various topics including a list of convicts transported to the colonies from Lincolnshire
Family Research Link On this site you will find an entire copy of the indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales from 1837 PAY PER VIEW ($$)
FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records.
1901 Census The official genealogy site of the Welsh & English census information for 1901. FREE Searching of the fully indexed database then pay for access to detailed information and images with Vouchers or Credit Cards.

Ireland 

Irish Origins offers a collection of records from Ireland, some free online searches and some paid services. Some information on Irish convicts.

Scotland

General Register Office for Scotland CHARGE FOR SEARCH The official government source of genealogical data for Scotland. Includes online searches for BDM events and some census. Images may be purchased.
National Archives of Scotland is the repository for the public and legal records of Scotland but also holds many local and private archives.
National Library of Scotland includes some early town plans and background information on those towns.
Scots Origins offers a collection of records from Scotland, some free online searches and some paid services. 
Scottish Archives Network discusses a range of interesting topics regarding life and work in Scotland in days past. Provides links to other resources.
The Scotsman Scotland's daily newspaper includes a searchable archive of articles from 1817 through to 1900, it includes such events as the Highland clearances and the Tay Bridge disaster. Searching is free and results are displayed on screen as the pages were originally printed.

Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society 
Tay Valley Family History Society 
Scottish Records Association is concerned with the preservation and use of historical records in Scotland. It provides a forum where users, owners and custodians of records can discuss matters relating to their custody, conservation and accessibility.
The Glasgow Story offers historical insights into the rise of  the city of Glasgow through the industrial revolution to what it is today. Interesting reading.
Ayrshire Ancestors Website offers a collection of genealogy data from parts of Ayrshire. Mostly fee services, but some free searches.
Scottish Documents offer free access to a fully searchable index of over 520,000 Scottish wills and testaments dating from 1500 to 1901. Not all wills are online. Copies of documents can be purchased.
Monikie.org.uk A selection of  Family History sites,  some 'related' to the Monikie area, the Stirling surname, and many other items of interest. Also, links to sources of further reference and interest.

The Statistical Accounts of Scotland  covering the 1790s and the 1830s, are based largely on information supplied by each parish church minister, the original (first) Statistical Account and the New (second) Statistical Account provide a rich record of a wide variety of topics: wealth, class and poverty; climate, agriculture, fishing and wildlife; population, schools, and the moral health of the people.

Public Record Office  FREE SEARCHES National archives of the UK, includes free searches of historical documents and digital images of some records on a fee basis. Includes a wills index for England and Wales.
UK FreeCen Project
FREE SEARCHES This volunteer project aims to provide a "free-to-view" online searchable database of the 19th century UK (England, Wales and Scotland) census returns. The project is still incomplete, but many counties are included.

British Data Archive aims to provide access to census records in full, in your own home, on both PC and Mac, at a reasonable cost.
S&N Genealogy Supplies offer a  wides choice of Family History Software and Data CDs giving you the tools to research your family history.

Global Genealogical Organisations Ancestry.com offers a range of searchable resources including surname lists and census information. Some free and some paid services available. Predominantly USA and Canada information, but with some international content. Includes Ancestry World Tree where you can submit your family tree.

RootsWeb is Ancestry.com's affiliated free genealogical resource, including family trees, surname lists, message boards , mailing lists and free web space for hosting family trees.

FamilySearch FREE SEARCHES is the online content of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints genealogical resource. Contains a vast amount of searchable international information relating to births, deaths and marriages. Most material is taken from parish registers.

Genealogy.com Offers searchable lists, family trees and message boards. Predominantly American, but with very useful information, especially the surname message boards. (Go to Community - Message Boards)

Geneanet offers a range of searches including country specific surnames. Hosts surname connections lists.

Mailing Lists Yahoo! offers a wide range of mailing lists which you can sign up to. This allows you to post messages and receive group mailings. Subjects include surnames, locations and other common interests. You can even start your own mailing list.
Military Commonwealth War Graves Commission FREE SEARCHES Allows searches for information on the graves of all Commonwealth service personnel who died during various wars. In some cases a small amount of information may be available regarding the deceased parents or spouse, and address when enlisted.

Search Engines Search Engines allow you to search the web for documents based on key words. The more popular ones are listed below. Many include message boards and web directories which group together web sites with a common topic. Many include image searches as well.

Free Software

GenoPro is excellent for displaying family trees in a "christmas tree" style. Is easy to use, but doesn't have some of the advanced features.

Ancestry Family Tree is a more advanced program, with advanced features. Recommended for advanced users. It is available for a small charge from Ancestry.com

Legacy Family Tree is again a fairly advanced program with some of the features available when you upgrade to the deluxe version
